Salt (NaCl) is a vital nutrient and is necessary for good physiological body functions. However, the average daily salt consumption in the western world, between 10 and 12g/day, is considered far too high vs. the recommended daily consumption of 2g/day. Scientists are convinced that high sodium intake is responsible for increasing blood pressure (hypertension), a serious risk for cardiovascular diseases, therefore, food manufacturers have increased efforts to reduce salt in food formulations.
